# What Does “Quality” Mean in Construction? Here’s a Real Example from Roof Slab to WaterproofingAt SURYA Construction, we often say “

quality work” — but what exactly does that mean? Many people have this question in mind: What is quality in construction? We’ve mentioned “quality” in many of our videos, but today, let’s break it down with a practical example — the **roof slab**.## Step-by-Step: What Quality Looks Like in Roof Slab WorkLet’s start with the basics. A **roof slab** is one of the most crucial parts of a building. Getting it right means your structure will be strong, long-lasting, and leak-free.### 1. **Centering and Plastering**First, the centering is done properly. This ensures the slab is supported correctly during the concrete pouring. After that, plastering is done smoothly so that the slab gets an even finish.### 2. **Precision Wood Cutting**Based on the structural drawing, the wooden support is cut with exact measurements. This is important to maintain the strength and alignment of the slab.### 3. **Covering Blocks Installation**Next comes placing the **covering blocks**. These blocks must be neat and of the right size and spacing to ensure proper concrete cover over steel bars. This is essential for durability and protection from corrosion.## Slab Thickness and Concrete RatioA high-quality slab should have a **minimum thickness of 5 inches**.The concrete mix ratio for manual mixing is usually:- **M20 grade**: 1 part cement : 1.5 parts sand : 3 parts aggregates This ensures the slab gets the necessary strength and durability. Some people have asked whether this ratio is too dry. But this is the correct proportion. If you’re using Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC), we recommend going for **M25 grade**, because during transport, some strength may reduce. Asking for M25 ensures your slab still gets good strength by the time it’s poured.## Manual Mixing vs RMCManual mixing is still a good option — just ensure the gang mixes properly. A cone mixing method is preferred, followed by proper leveling. This gives the slab an even and strong finish.Once the concrete is poured, vibration is done to eliminate air gaps and ensure compactness.## Importance of Curing**Curing is key to quality.**For at least **7 days**, curing should be done daily — on top and sides — even if no further work is being done. This prevents cracks. If curing is not done, you risk **cracks and water leakage** later. For better results, continue curing for **up to 14 days**. Don’t remove the shuttering boards too early — let the concrete set fully and gain strength.## Moving to the Next FloorOnce the slab is set and cured well, you can proceed with parapet walls, tank slabs, or upper floors. Quality should be maintained in every stage — don’t rush it.## Waterproofing – The Next Big StepBathrooms and wet areas require special attention. After plastering the walls and removing waste cement:- **Clean the surface properly**- Allow it to **dry completely**- Then, apply **two coats of waterproofing**We use a product called **Fast Rock** — a high-quality waterproofing material. It forms a strong, brushable coat that prevents leakage.Ensure a **half-inch slope** in the concrete for water drainage. During this stage, we also mix **200 ml of waterproofing chemical per cement bag** to enhance the protection.## Final Plumbing and Flooring WorkOnce waterproofing is done:- Plumbing work begins- Then, we move to tile flooring- After external plastering, tanks are installed- Water is filled, and pipelines are tested## The Final Word: Quality Is in the DetailsQuality doesn’t mean just using expensive materials. It’s about doing every step **with care, precision, and responsibility**. From the wood cutting and concrete ratio to curing and waterproofing — every small detail makes a huge difference. At **SURYA Construction**, we don’t compromise on these standards. That’s why our buildings stand strong and our clients stay happy for years.—### Want to Build a Home That Lasts a Lifetime?Contact **SURYA Construction Company** 📞 9980848558 🌐 [www.suryaconstructionsblr.com](https://www.suryacon
